Your Personal Mission Statement - More Than A Mantra.
The initial work of starting a home-based business, whether as a consultant or as a small business owner, involves the actual creation of an entity that is designed to support your lifestyle. It's a task that requires consideration, care, and contemplation to best meet the needs of its creator. One of the best ways to set the foundations for a new business endeavor is to create your personal mission statement to reflect precisely what you want out of the business!
Far too many people pooh-pooh the idea of a personal mission statement as nothing more than words on paper, but the fact of the matter is that it is one of the first and most important steps in creating a lucrative business reality.
Include What Is Most Important :
A personal mission statement needs to capture the most vital elements of why the business exists in the first place. For example, it is often an excellent idea to include such details as the identity of the company, what the company does (or what need it serves), and why the company does it. These three simple questions are important starting points that will usually lead to other questions, including :
Are you in business to make a profit, or simply to fund your lifestyle ?
What sort of a work environment do you choose to create ?
What kind of a relationship do you forge with your clientele ?
What type of growth do you envision for the organization ?
While it may be tempting to go into excessive details about the business, it is usually best to use the mission statement to set general guidelines rather than clarify points of company policy. In fact, some of the most effective personal mission statements for companies can be achieved in less than 5 sentences !
Here is FRC Marketing Group's vision statement in five sentences :

Mission Statements Should Make Sense :
Anyone who wishes to be considered a serious entrepreneur cannot approach the building of a mission statement lightly. Far too many companies have convoluted statements that make little sense and provide next to no information about the type of company they are trying to become.
You Must Actually Believe the Mission Statement !
Personally forging the identity of a business is a very powerful proposition. It allows YOU to set the parameters within which the business will operate and the values that are to be the guiding principles of its success, and to actually create the professional personality of the organization. Here's what successful business guru Jack Welch has to say about it :
"Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision and relentlessly drive it to completion," asserts Jack Welch, Chairman and CEO of General Electric in his interview featured in the best-selling book, The Articulate Executive.
In order to manage this task accurately, it is crucial that the business owner selects principles and details that are actually important to him or her. This helps keep the business in line with the real intent of its creator, which is a very important thing! In addition, simply choosing a mission statement based on "things that sounded good at the time" is unlikely to inspire anyone when that person faces challenges or needs to be reminded about core values.
An excellent mission statement makes a tremendous difference in the creation and the on-going development of any business. Great words and vision can truly inspire all who read it. Even if your personal mission statement is only used as a guide, it keeps your home-based business--however small--in line with its most cherished principles.
